Future Thinking

In recent months, our site at Flatfish has changed almost beyond recognition.

As our company grows, we are eager to reinvest in our business. Every penny we reinvest helps to build our business, taking us from strength to strength.

We have recently created a purpose-built added value room. Our technical, engineering and other departments worked hard to plan and implement the room to ensure it worked efficiently and had minimal impact on our current operations.

This room was built to serve our new projects elevating our fish products and creating convenience for our customers. Trend data from the National Food Survey (NFS) and Expenditure and Food Survey (EFS) show a significant barrier to eating fish is a lack of recipe knowledge (34 per cent). We hope providing consumers with no-fuss fish products that create restaurant-worthy dishes with minimal effort will help overcome this barrier and give consumers the confidence to try more species and recipes.

Our goal is to get more people to eat more fish, more sustainably. By creating products that are easy to cook, we hope to make fish more accessible to the broader population. This room allows us to add herbs, sauces and other products to the fish with no contamination risk to our other operations.

Our second project was more significant than the first. We extended the factory again to accommodate a brand new Marel hand-filleting line. This extension meant remodelling a large proportion of our wet processing area. With the tireless work from our employees, the remodel had no impact on our day to day business.

The new line is part of our bigger plan to increase our onsite processing capacity. We hope we can add value to our process while gaining increased control over our supply chains, raw materials and, as a result, continue to supply the freshest, highest quality fish to UK retailers. It also allows us to move away from traditional water-intensive methods of processing. The new line will reduce our water usage and our carbon footprint with it.

We are proud of our fantastic team here at Flatfish, without whom none of this would be possible. As we grow, we will continue to invest in ourselves, safeguarding the future of our company, our employees and the planet.
